Hey everyone! I am trying something new! I met Sheila Frank through modelmayhem.com! She messaged me one day, and we just started to hit it off! She is a great designer, and just showed in NYC again this past fashion week! So, I decided to interview her! Check out her website here.
First of all, how did you get into fashion design?
I sketched wedding gowns as a kid. and Made barbie clothes out of tape and toilet paper lol. But I never had a desire to be a Fashion Designer. I always had an evolving style and within my circle of friends, I was known for dressing crazy… I studied Fine Arts, at a community college and then transferred to a 4 yr school (Pennsylvania College of Art and Design) There is when FASHION became my life. Project after project… it was due to the suggestion from a few of my professors that I should change my Major. I the next year I transferred to Moore College of Art and Design.
Did you go to school and was it worth it?Yes, I did. Was it worth it?… Yes because I learned how to pattern drape/draft. NO because of the huge student loan debt I’ve been left with.
Who is your target? What kind of woman wears Sheila Frank?
I’m not sure if I have a target. I guess the artist. My label continues to change, each season I feel something new which is expressed in my design. I do feel that my clothes can be worn by all shapes and sizes. I’m a body conscious designer.
That is awesome, where can we buy your items?
My stuff is made to order. You can find contact on my website. :) My fall collection will be in store in may/june, still tba.  However, you can buy my swimwear on my etsy, it goes up to sizes 22.
What inspired you for your Fall/Winter 2011 collection?
My fall line is inspired by the many changes the industrial revolution caused to cities and to the economy, I created the line “Industrial Revolution”. The influences of iron, steel and machinery can be seen throughout the entirety of the collection. (You can read more here.)
When would you consider your line to be a complete success? Are you already there?
Success… when I pay off my student loans.Where do you get most of your inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from everything. My aesthetic in the silhouettes is driven by past eras. My concepts just pop in my head in a moment of thought. I day dream a lot I guess. I enjoy creating a story and bringing it to life with my clothes and the photos.
Where do you see your line in 5 years?
In 5 yrs I would like to continue to create. I would like to be available in stores and continue my custom bridal and prom gowns.
Thanks Sheila for letting me interview you!! :) Do you like her designs as much as I do??

The Washington Post has a great article in today’s paper about the debate of plus size women in fashion.  The Post addresses the recent debate of model sizes, V magazine, and celebrity sizes.  They post also talks with L.A. based designer Kevan Hall who created the gown that Gabby Sidibe wore to the Globes.  He has worked with a lot of actresses who are not the typical hanger and he says “it’s all about picking the right silhouette for her shape.”

And it doesn’t matter if a woman is a size 2 or a size 16, “you’re always treading lightly. I’ve had actresses who are a size 2 stand in front of me and weep. I’ve had young girls who want to cover their arms and older women who want to cover their arms,” he says. The most significant difference in creating a dress for a larger size is that often a designer has to tamp down his ego. He can’t as easily force his vision onto the woman since she doesn’t have the physique of a hanger.”

Kevan Hall addressed a truth the fashion industry knows very well.  It is much easier for a designer to design clothing for a hanger then it is for someone with curves.  If it was just as easy to design for women with curves as it is for straight sizes, I can guarantee you that there would be a lot more high level designers designing plus clothing.

Hall goes on to say, “But at the end of the day, it’s always really about the client.  Let’s be realistic, after all. What is the end-use of these clothes?”  As we know, and Madison Plus is working to address, the end use of clothing is to present the best version of you to the world!  Clothing is another version of expression and we should all be able to equally express ourselves to the world.  Calling all designers!  Take note!

—If designers today had talent, they could make all bodies look damn good. I wish they would actually challenge themselves…

Believe it or not, this is me.

I have been trying to work with this designer for like a year… and today is the big Photoshoot with amazing Designer/makeup artist/photographer

Thank GOD it is with photographer Dawn Derbyshire, because I have worked with her so many times and will hopefully feel confident with her behind the camera…. It is just tough when you want to impress someone, and sometimes you can freeze up, or forget what your doing (poses).

I need some serious luck or praise, words of wisdom?

Ok, well this dress is gorgeous… I know we cannot see the whole thing but the print is to die for.
I found this designer today.. And I do like a lot of what she has, however IT IS SOOOO FREAKING EXPENSIVE!! ahhhh.
Her name is Anna Scholz, her collections are very good for curvy girls, however I personally would not spend that much money on any of those dresses. Call me cheap, call me what you will.
What do you think of her items?
