Samantha Critchell - Associated Press for the News Observer - Updated August 2, 2010

The designer-level racks at select Saks Fifth Avenue stores are expanding. Beginning this fall, the options for women looking for sizes 16 and 18 will include more high-fashion styles.

“Saks Fifth Avenue always strives to meet the needs of our customers. After recent review, we concluded there are customers who desire designer clothing in sizes that are not currently available in our stores,” the company said in a statement.

Saks has for years had its Salon Z department, which caters to plus sizes, but this new initiative targets ripped-from-the-runway looks from the likes of Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, and will include larger sizes within designer departments.

Where double-digit fashion is rare

Adding larger sizes, especially for designers who sometimes don’t sell anything larger than a 10 or 12 in their own boutiques, is a considerable commitment, said Sasha Iglehart, deputy fashion director at Glamour. “It’s a real investment for these brands to make sizes in that range. It’s not just taking a pattern and making it bigger,” she said. “The proportions are different, and there has to be real thought into what’s flattering to women in that size range.”

“I hope this inspires other retailers and designers,” Iglehart added.

The conversation in the fashion industry about larger sizes has gotten louder in recent months. It had been rooted in the notion that models were too thin and setting a bad example for young women.

Magazines, including Glamour, are now routinely including a variety of body types in their pages, but Iglehart said securing trend-right outfits for anyone bigger than a size 8 - even when dealing with celebrities - can be a challenge. “We want to help women look great, and to have more sources to do that is fantastic.”

The new skinny: Boney backlash

During the last round of various cities’ Fashion Weeks in February, there was a noticeable effort to cast some curvier models on the catwalk, and for its resort show in June, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld put size 12-model Crystal Renn in a starring role.

Red-carpet favorite Marchesa, meanwhile, created a custom plus-size Oscar gown for Gabourey Sidibe.

“She looked stunning and carried the dress beautifully,” said Marchesa co-founder and designer Georgina Chapman.

“It’s always an honor to work with talented individuals like her who love fashion and have such amazing personal style.”

Iglehart said that many women, regardless of size, want the opportunity to participate in fashion.

“I hope the fashion industry is changing its attitude,” she said.

“If we have the designers finally on board, I’m sure there’ll be no shortage of customers for great clothes.”

(Damn, now I am going to have to save my pennies for this stuff! haha ;)

Well first of all HAPPY EASTER!!! :)
Secondly, I wanted to let you all know how yesterday went when I modeled for Saks! It was INFORMAL modeling, so basically I put on the clothes they wanted me to put on and walked around the store. haha. It was fun, very low-key. The clothes were…. lets just say a little less exciting than I would have hoped. I suppose you have to expect that being a bigger girl, but it still pisses me off to NO END. However, I do understand that girls my age aren’t exactly their target market, but what about us? What are we supposed to wear? Which is the constant question I ask myself, not like I can afford Prada, Burberry, or Gucci, but If I could I wouldn’t be able to fit into any of it… The sad truth.
The other girl who modeled with me was 46 years old haha, she has been modeling for like 17 years. She kept saying “chubby models always have to smile”. This intrigued me, only because she is very naive to the point where she doesn’t want to push the limits. She is stuck on the commercial look, which bores me to death. I mean I will do it, obviously, but it isn’t all I want to do. ALSO, she doesn’t do print. Which explains a lot, because in print you don’t only smile as you can see in my port I rarely smile. But anyways, the ladies styling us were older too, so most of the looks were for older women. But there were two skinny skinny skinny models there too, who modeled the straight size clothes, their clothing articles rocked… Oh fashion world, why can’t you change for me? ;)
So yea, it was a good experience, good money, and above all interesting. Everyone was really nice, everything was really expensive, if you followed me on twitter you saw how I posted twit-pics on a Michael Kors purse I carried, and a Prada belt I wore! I also wore Kate Spade shoes!! It was weird that my outfits were probably all together $1000, but they didn’t make me feel like I was worth that much… haha Funny how that works.
P.S. I found out that Saks only uses Ford models for print… LAME
ANYWAYS, enough about me.
How are you?

Haha, I stole this shirt from my boyfriend!! :)
GUESS WHO GOT A MODELING JOB?!?!?!?!!!!! ME! haha :) Yay n’ stufffff. It is through my agency which is a huge stunner, because I thought they hated me. It is a “informal modeling” job haha that’s all I know. Therefore I googled what informal modeling means, apparently its:
A type of modeling in which the model circulates among consumers and customers and answers questions about the garment or accessories that he/she is modeling.
I think that sounds pretty damn fun! :) haha. I am just used to fashion shows and shoots, its interesting how many terms there are… I found this site helpful!
So, that is really great. I hope that this is a start for me! :) Watch out fashion world, here I come! ;)
Oh yea, did I tell you who this “informal modeling” gig is for? SAKS!!!! (Salon Z)
Don’t worry I will tell you allllllll about it, it isn’t until April 3rd! So therefore I will probably go tanning a little bit, get a mani/pedi, and work out! haha Pressure is onnnnnn!
Ahhhh! Are you as excited as I am?
